Bird Fest is back for its fourth consecutive year! Join us for birding walks, art workshops, food vendors and more. All ages are welcome at this free community event.
Explore the diverse bird habitats of Hawkins Loop during peak breeding and brooding season. Borrow binoculars and spotting scopes or bring your own!
Get creative with our bird-related “make and take” workshops, featuring naturalist and illustrator Casey Girard of River Thrush Studio, our Hawkins Loop Summer Artist-in-Residence, and Hurdle Mills woodworker Simon Barth.
All ages and experience levels welcome! NC Youth Outdoor Engagement Commission will be awarding 2026 Birdwatching Outdoor Patches for participants under 18 years old.

Join Brooklynn Joyner - botanist, social scientist, and environmental educator - for a peaceful morning of nature journaling as we observe and capture the natural world around us through words and sketches.
Together we’ll learn about and experience the benefits of nature journaling, using prompts and guided activities to help you get started with this new hobby or practice.
No art skill needed, just your curiosity. Complimentary sketchbook and supplies provided, or bring your own! Whether you’re new to journaling or already bring a notebook on hikes, this session will help you deepen your attention and connection to nature.

Sunday Stroll: Wish Tree
Our semi-regular series! Drop by as your weekend winds down to relax and explore the season’s sights and sounds at Hawkins Loop.
This month's free, all-ages, open trail day features a Wish Tree activity for guests to share their hopes and celebrate springtime. Meet neighbors and community leaders, enjoy open spaces, and share your hopes for the season ahead.
The "wish tree" is an ancient springtime tradition to celebrate renewal, growth, and hope by hanging written wishes on branches. Many cultures host this spring ritual around May 1st to celebrate Earth's rebirth.
NATURE NOTE: All wish tree materials provided and will be collected after the event to ensure the safety of the birds and other wildlife at Hawkins Loop

Skilled educators will guide groups through the dark night sky and acres of pasture and wooded trails at The Land at Hawkins Loop, a family-owned farm and nature-based event venue located less than 30 minutes from Durham, Hillsborough, Roxboro in beautiful Person County.
Kendall Nelson, NASA Solar System Ambassador and Person County resident, will have powerful telescopes on hand or bring your own to set up on our stargazing lawn
"Whisper in the Woods" trail walks to activate your senses while the natural world transitions from day to night
Person County 4-H will have space-themed learning activities and bi-lingual star maps to share
Hawkins Loop Snack Bar will offer pre-order and on-site purchases for refreshments

Valentine's 5-K Trail Day
Be part of a new tradition!
Run or walk the winter woods and pasture trails on a spacious, family-owned 63-acre farm. Two laps will take you through old-growth forest, along the stream, past a variety of classic North Carolina Piedmont tobacco barns, around the pond, and aross the finish line in front of the goat pen. Hang by the bonfire with your cheering section and make new connections while you take in the views.
Gate opens 8am, Race starts at 10am
All-ages and experience levels are welcome (Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult)

Twilight Nature Walk
Celebrate The North Carolina Science Festival in beautiful Person County, NC!
Activate your senses while the natural world transitions from day to night at this all ages, outdoor event. Educators will guide groups through pasture and wooded trails while the full moon rises over the pond. Check out designated observation areas for the night sky, birds, moths, frogs, native plants, and more. Grab a bite from our food vendors and bring a blanket to relax on the lawn or sit by the campfire in our picnic area.
The Land at Hawkins Loop, located less than 30 minutes from Durham, Hillsborough, Roxboro in beautiful Person County, offers more than 50 acres of pasture and old growth forest, heavily populated by a wide range of birds and wildlife - including a priority block of the North Carolina Bird Atlas citizen science initiative!
Admission is free! Registration is required. $10 parking fee per vehicle

About Your Facilitator
Daniel Hatcher, MPH is a nationally recognized workshop facilitator, having presented at education conferences in over 40 states and Canada, including SXSW EDU and the Global Outdoor Health Summit.
He is also a Strala Yoga Guide and sound healing practitioner. With over 15 years of experience in wellness and youth development, Daniel integrates mindfulness, movement, and creative arts to foster spaces of deep connection and authentic collaboration.
Certified in Nature and Forest Therapy and Mental Health First Aid, Daniel recently authored a chapter in Wonder Libraries, highlighting the power of play and nature for healing and health.
