Nature at Night: Sights, Sounds, and Stars
Join the North Carolina State-Wide Star Party in Person County!
Skilled educators will guide groups through the dark night sky and acres of pasture and wooded trails at The Land at Hawkins Loop, a family-owned farm and nature-based event venue located less than 30 minutes from Durham, Hillsborough, Roxboro in beautiful Person County.
Kendall Nelson, NASA Solar System Ambassador and Person County resident, will have powerful telescopes on hand or bring your own to set up on our stargazing lawn
Brooklynn Joyner, a botanist, social scientist, and environmental educator with a passion for connecting people with nature and science, will groups on "Whisper in the Woods" trail walks to activate your senses while the natural world transitions from day to night
The Walking Classroom team will loan guests a personal podcast player to walk, listen, and learn with elementary and middle school lessons about astronomy, meteorology, and other STEM topics
A community bonfire will keep things cozy as the moon rises over the pond (weather permitting)
Hawkins Loop Snack Bar will offer pre-order and on-site purchases for refreshments
Pre-registration via Eventbrite is required.
This FREE event will take place entirely outdoors and will be postponed in the event of heavy rain or wind.

Explore the diverse bird habitats of Hawkins Loop during peak breeding and brooding season with expert guides.
Valentine's 5-K Trail Day
Be part of a new tradition!
Run or walk the winter woods and pasture trails on a spacious, family-owned 63-acre farm. Two laps will take you through old-growth forest, along the stream, past a variety of classic North Carolina Piedmont tobacco barns, around the pond, and aross the finish line in front of the goat pen. Hang by the bonfire with your cheering section and make new connections while you take in the views.
Gate opens 8am, Race starts at 10am
All-ages and experience levels are welcome (Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult)

Fresh baked pizza for sale by Person County’s Wilkerson Catering & Co.

Bird Fest is back for its third consecutive year! Join us for guided birding and botany walks, nature exploration, citizen science research, community celebration, and so much more!
Learn bird identification techniques from environmental educators from NC Bird Atlas and NC Wildlife Resources. Binoculars and spotting scopes will be available to borrow from Field Inclusive!
Explore native bird habitats and learn about creating bird-friendly backyards from botanists from Bottom Up Native Plants
Contribute your birdwatching observations to the North Carolina Bird Atlas citizen research project
Connect with fellow birding enthusiasts and nature lovers in a welcoming and serene setting!

Twilight Nature Walk
Celebrate The North Carolina Science Festival in beautiful Person County, NC!
Activate your senses while the natural world transitions from day to night at this all ages, outdoor event. Educators will guide groups through pasture and wooded trails while the full moon rises over the pond. Check out designated observation areas for the night sky, birds, moths, frogs, native plants, and more. Grab a bite from our food vendors and bring a blanket to relax on the lawn or sit by the campfire in our picnic area.
The Land at Hawkins Loop, located less than 30 minutes from Durham, Hillsborough, Roxboro in beautiful Person County, offers more than 50 acres of pasture and old growth forest, heavily populated by a wide range of birds and wildlife - including a priority block of the North Carolina Bird Atlas citizen science initiative!
Admission is free! Registration is required. $10 parking fee per vehicle

About Your Facilitator
Daniel Hatcher, MPH is a nationally recognized workshop facilitator, having presented at education conferences in over 40 states and Canada, including SXSW EDU and the Global Outdoor Health Summit.
He is also a Strala Yoga Guide and sound healing practitioner. With over 15 years of experience in wellness and youth development, Daniel integrates mindfulness, movement, and creative arts to foster spaces of deep connection and authentic collaboration.
Certified in Nature and Forest Therapy and Mental Health First Aid, Daniel recently authored a chapter in Wonder Libraries, highlighting the power of play and nature for healing and health.
