The Land at Hawkins Loop sits in a priority research district for the North Carolina Bird Atlas, a multi-year citizen science initiative that encourages people of all ages and experience levels to explore the outdoors and contribute observational data about the birds they see to an online database.

June is a crucial month for data collection as birds are in peak breeding season: migrating, building nests, and caring for their young. 

The NC Bird Atlas, along with similar databases in New York, Maryland, Puerto Rico, and Ontario, Canada will inform bird research and hundreds of conservation decisions and peer-reviewed papers, and thousands of student projects worldwide.
